The Latest China Internet Report Released in September 2020

On September 29, 2020, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the 46th “Statistical Report on Internet Development in China”.

 

1. The scale of Chinese Internet users

The report shows that as of June 2020, the number of Chinese Internet users has reached 940 million. Compared with March 2020, Chinese Internet users have increased by 36.25 million. The Internet penetration rate in China reached 67.0%, an increase of 2.5 percentage points from March 2020.

As of June 2020, the number of mobile Internet users in China reached 932 million, an increase of 35.46 million from March 2020. The proportion of Internet users using mobile phones to access the Internet reached 99.2%, basically the same as in March 2020.

As of June 2020, the number of rural Internet users in China was 285 million, accounting for 30.4% of the total Internet users, an increase of 30.63 million from March 2020; the number of urban Internet users was 654 million, accounting for 69.6% of the total Internet users, an increase from March 2020 5.62 million.

As of June 2020, the proportion of Chinese netizens using mobile phones to access the Internet has reached 99.2%; the proportion of Internet users using TV is 28.6%; the proportions of Internet users using desktop computers, laptops, and tablets are 37.3%, 31.8% and 27.5%, respectively .

2. People who do not use the Internet in China

  • As of June 2020, the number of non-netizens in China is 463 million, of which non-netizens in urban areas account for 43.8%, and non-netizens in rural areas account for 56.2%. Non-netizens are still dominated by people in rural areas.
  • Statistics show that the proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not understand computers/networks is 48.9%.
  • The proportion of non-netizens who do not go online due to educational restrictions is 18.2%.
  • The proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not have computers and other Internet devices is 14.8%.
  • The proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they are too old/too young is 12.9%.
  • The proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not have time to go online, are not interested, etc. are all less than 10%.

3. Chinese instant messaging users

As of June 2020, the number of instant messaging users in China reached 931 million, an increase of 34.66 million from March 2020, accounting for 99.0% of the total Internet users. The number of mobile instant messaging users reached 930 million, an increase of 40.24 million from March 2020, accounting for 99.8% of mobile Internet users.

4. Chinese search engine users

As of June 2020, the number of Chinese search engine users reached 766 million, an increase of 15.39 million from March 2020, accounting for 81.5% of the total Internet users. The number of mobile search engine users reached 761 million, an increase of 15.42 million from March 2020, accounting for 81.6% of mobile Internet users.

5. Chinese online shopping users

As of June 2020, the number of online shopping users in China has reached 749 million, an increase of 39.12 million from March 2020, accounting for 79.7% of the total Internet users. The number of mobile online shopping users reached 747 million, an increase of 39.47 million from March 2020, accounting for 80.1% of mobile Internet users.

As of June 2020, the number of online payment users in China has reached 805 million, an increase of 37.02 million from March 2020, accounting for 85.7% of the total Internet users. The number of mobile online payment users reached 802 million, an increase of 36.64 million from March 2020, accounting for 86.0% of mobile Internet users.

6. Chinese video users

As of June 2020, the number of users of online video (including short videos) in China reached 888 million, an increase of 37.77 million from March 2020, accounting for 94.5% of the total Internet users. Among them, the number of short video users is 818 million, an increase of 44.61 million from March 2020, accounting for 87.0% of the total netizens.

As of June 2020, the number of live webcast users in China has reached 562 million, an increase of 2.48 million from March 2020, accounting for 59.8% of the total netizens. Among them, e-Commerce live streaming has 309 million users, an increase of 44.3 million from March 2020, accounting for 32.9% of the total netizens.

7. Chinese online education users

As of June 2020, the number of online education users in China has reached 381 million, accounting for 40.5% of the total Internet users.

8. Chinese online medical users

As of June 2020, the number of online medical users in China has reached 276 million, accounting for 29.4% of the total Internet users.

9. Chinese telecommuting users

As of June 2020, the number of remote office users in China has reached 199 million, accounting for 21.2% of the total Internet users.
